Worship- The What, Why, How

So here is my discussion for today; there is so much confusion, literature, heated debates discussions that are circulating about  worship; but I personally feel that is not so much on just worship but understanding ‘What’ worship is, the ‘Why’ the ‘How’ and the ‘Where’.

Worship is being confused with the various forms and expressions of worship, but worship is a part of us and not separated from us and it is not something we just do as an event or just on Sunday morning, we were created to worship so it is part and parcel of us our complete being. The singing, flow of songs , teaching Sunday school, etc these are all acts or expressions of worship.

I came across so many definitions of worship over the last ten years but there are two that stand out for me;

1) The reverent love and devotion accorded to a deity, idol or object (Oxford dictionary), and 2) Worship is the believer’s response of all that they are, mind, emotions, will, body, to what God is and says and does. (Warren Wiersbe -Real Worship)

Worship is our total submission of us to God, a complete total surrender to His love, will and purpose, this is definitely not self centered and based on how we feel. We must give all that we have, because worship is what we do, it is a part of us.

Worship is not about someones’s taste or style, because God created us with different personalities, skills, talent and abilities, but we were all created to worship Him. In other words worship is for Him, and our response is to Him. According to 1Pet 2:9 “We are to declare the praises of Him who called us out of darkness into His marvelous light”

The “Why” we Worship

It is His Love for us first, this wonderful gift to us, He is worthy of our Praise our worship, the creator of the universe. We have seen and know what He has done and there is no one He can be compared to. He is Holy and awesome and deserve our praise and not just for what He has done but because who He is.

The ‘How’ we Worship

In Psa 95 it reads; Oh come, let us sing to the Lord, Let us shout joyfully to the Rock of our salvation, let us come before His presence with thanksgiving, let us shout joyfully to Him with psalms for the Lord is a great God and a great King above all gods……..

Let us worship and bow down and kneel before the Lord our God our Maker, and Psa 98, there are many ways to worship Him but there is no greater model than what we read in Psa 95, 98, 22:3

Dont wait to cranked up my friends.

Weigh in on this.

  1. Yes cuz, worship is a lifestyle. To be true worshippers our minds must be pure, our hearts true…what we say, think, do, the places we go, the way we dress, etc must honour God.
    Phil. 4:8 Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.

  2. Last night I was going through some scripture verses on my own while my husband was on the laptop. He loves 90’s ballads/soft rock, so that was our background music. A song came on called ‘You say it best when you say nothing at all’ about a man describing the different ways his wife/girlfriend shows him that she loves him without saying anything. I have been known to worship to secular music, dedicating the songs to the Lord where inspired. In this case, my hands went up and the tears came down. This was my worshipful response to the many ways in which God daily shows me He loves me without Him having to speak to me. I believe that the heart of worship is knowing that we love God because He loved us first. It is our response to His awsomeness, be it by way of thanks, song, dance, silence, sharing His love, giving or simply throwing a smile heavenward that says, “I know that was You.” Your response is your own and whichever way it manifests, believe that it is exactly what He wants . God is good.

    1. this was awesomely put, and if we can get a hold of this and really understand the ‘Why ‘ we worship our lives, our services our marriages will be so much better. Well put, thank you.
